Student Reviews

I need to begin by thanking those who have reviewed DC Guitar Lessons on Yelp before me and the reason being is that if not for them, I would not be playing guitar right now... About twelve years ago I decided I wanted to play guitar, so I went to the local music store and bought myself one.  Friends encouraged me and some showed me the basics - chords and what not - and I monkeyed around here and there, but I quickly became bored because I wasn't seeing results as quickly as I wanted...eventually, the guitar "playing" died down and soon my old guitar was relegated to the living room corner collecting dust.

Well, one night this summer I decided that it was time again to get back into the guitar playing game and googled "guitar lessons in DC" and to my good fortune Gregg's Yelp page was one of the first results that showed up. I read the reviews, liked what I read, and emailed Gregg telling him that I was interested in taking lessons.  Gregg responded a few hours later and we scheduled my first lesson.  It was at that first lesson that I realized that I got lucky - I had found an instructor who is truly passionate about teaching guitar and introducing his students to the joys that guitar playing brings with it. Gregg is extremely patient and really is there for his students.  He has a saying that it is never too late to learn to play and in my case that really hits home.  I don't have aspirations to be a professional player, rather I want to have the basics (and then some) and be able to play "campfire" tunes here and there and Gregg has more than provided me with the tools and basics to allow that to happen.

Gregg's teaching really is tailored to the individual and I truly appreciate that.  I always leave each lesson energized and having learned something new (half the time I don't realize it until the lesson is over - he kind of sneaks the learning into it without you realizing it!).  He makes learning and "struggling" fun.  I say struggling because like anything, learning to play guitar won't happen overnight - rather it's a progression and requires practice.  The tricks and lesson plans he provides makes practicing fun and within a few short weeks I really began seeing results!  Results that I never would have seen if I tried learning from a book or just playing chords downloaded off the Internet.  I am happy with my choice to go with Gregg and DC Guitar Lessons to begin my journey towards guitar playing and recommend anyone who is even remotely interested in learning how to play to go with DC Guitar Lessons - you won't be disappointed.  I'm not.

i've been taking lessons from gregg for a loooong time....hmm, like maybe almost two years. in those two years, i've learned a ton. gregg is an awesome teacher and i don't think there's a better guitar teacher than him. he teaches me really cool songs, riffs, etc. i've been taking lessons since i was ten. actually, my little brother got the guitar lessons for his birthday, but i ended up taking them, and i was like, "wow, this is awesome!!!" so i kept taking them. gregg knows how to get me interested in what i'm doing, and his guitar lessons are never boring-they're always really fun, and i leave guitar lessons thinking, i have to get home and practice what gregg just showed me! but yeah, he's awesome. gregg got me to love guitar. he showed me that practice does indeed make perfect. i think that guitar lessons with gregg have been a great experience for me that i will never forget. i look forward to more lessons in the future. gregg-you rock!!!!

After a lesson with Greg I found him to be honest, helpful, and enthusiastic. He is definitely qualified to teach all levels of experience -- I have been playing for a few years and needed a 'tune up' with my right hand technique. Greg's advice after only one lesson has thus far proved beneficial in reducing my arm fatigue, and developing a more economic picking style for greater speed. He even offered equipment advice, and future suggestions in reaching my music goals.

Gregg does a great job teaching you how to understand and create music. He does so with a patience and passion for the music. Rather than have you merely memorize scales and songs, he teaches you the theory behind it, so that you understand it and can figure out songs on your own and improvise. He's got a great studio with a variety of guitars to play.

Gregg is a nice guy who really cares about the craft, the musicianship, and the community.  Unlike others who merely *can* play or *have* played for many years, Gregg has a curriculum as well as insight into how to develop one's guitar playing competence.  The little guitar studio from which he teaches is pretty unique; a den dedicated to the art of someone who loves what he does.

As mentioned, he's also very invested in the community: offering opportunities for guitar circles, his charity Guitars-not-Guns, as well as his support of the local Bloom Bar.
